In the early twentieth century, Margaret
Murray Washington, wife of Tuskegee's Booker T. Washington, worked
tirelessly along with other African American women to broaden society’s
understanding of what it meant to be black, a woman, a southerner, a
wife, a leader, and a caretaker in an often violent world. Historian
Sheena Harris’s presentation is based on her upcoming book, Beyond the Veil, the first biography of Margaret Murray Washington.
Harris is an assistant professor of History at Tuskegee University.
