Fact Check: Tubberville on Police Hiring

Tommy Tubberville talking about why people don't want to be police officers:

“They make barely more than welfare wages."
 Source AL.COM story.

The Average Ala. police officer salary    $53,100 (Zip Recruiter)
                                                                $53,049 (Salary.com)
                                                                $43,486 (Indeed.com)
                                                                $49,667 (Glassdoor.com)

Not a huge salary for a job that can get you killed, but above average in Alabama.
(The overall annual pay for all jobs in Alabama is $39,180.)

Welfare?
According to a libertarian-leaning Cato Institute study, welfare recipients in Alabama can receive benefits that are the equivalent of a $23,310 yearly salary.

On the other hand, Tubberville was paid  $2 million per-year salary through the 2015 season at Texas Tech, and that ranked him 52nd among head coaches, which may be why he thinks police are paid so poorly.
