Changing Names---of Forts & Schools

Fort Rucker

The process of changing the name of Alabama's Fort Rucker and nine other U.S. Army posts named for Confederate officers should be fairly easy.

So writes the Editorial Board of The N.Y. Times under this headline:

Putting Heroes, and Traitors, Where They Belong

The military should rechristen bases named for Confederates. Better options are not hard to find.

"The Confederate base names are a legacy of a shameful compromise with white supremacy that is thoroughly documented in the historical record. Replacing the names of traitors who waged war on the nation in an attempt to keep African-Americans in chains will not make racism magically disappear. But it is clearly an important step in the right direction."

Speaking of name changes:
The Montgomery school board will consider changing the names of three majority black schools. All three are names for confederate figures, including Robert E. Lee High School, where a statue was taken down by protestors and is in storage.
The board meeting will be tomorrow, Tuesday July 14, at 5:00PM in a system school that does not have a confederate name:  Carver High School.
