The Golden Ray "Salvage" Operation Continues

The big operation to remove the wreckage was halted when the Tropical Storm/Hurricane took a path up the East Coast. A huge yellow crane that had been moved into the area was taken to port for safekeeping.

Cutting and lifting operations to remove the wreckage of the four-year old ship are now now set to begin in early October.

"The wreck is stable and is not expected to impact the deep water channel or to commercial ship traffic. A safety zone around the EPB surrounding the motor vessel Golden Ray wreck site remains in effect to protect the response crews and the public."

It has been almost a year since the car-transporting ship overturned shortly after it left the Bruswick Georgia Port. All of the crew were rescued. The operation to cut the wreck into 8 giant pieces to remove it from the Sound is expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, including the loss of the ship and the thousands of new vehicles (many of them Hyundai cars) on-board. The vehicles were apparently built in South America and headed for the Middle East. The cost also includes the massive effort to remove the wreck from the water.
