“When (Texas GOP Chair) Allan West fantasizes about ‘Texas values’ and the like, he is summoning a non-existent picture of a singular Texas identity,” University of Texas Law professor Sanford Levinson, noted for his writing on secession and the Constitution, told me. Not only is Texas now firmly in swing state territory, with all its major cities now Democratic, but the state that produced more Trump voters than any other was deep-blue California.
