The U.S. Capitol Remains Closed, but The Alabama Capitol Is Reopened

Tourism is an important part of fiscal live for capitals....the U.S. Capitol in Washington, and the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery.

The Alabama Capitol (and the Governor's mansion) were locked down last year on March 16th.

And both have been missing out on significant tourism revenue because of the increased security following the insurrection in D.C., and concerns about violence in Montgomery and other state capitals. The Covid19 lock-downs have also contributed.

The Washington Post reported in late February that officials in the U.S. Capital are getting anxious:

"Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the District’s nonvoting delegate in Congress...has introduced a bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by Reps. Ted Budd (R-N.C.) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.), to prohibit the use of federal funds for any permanent fencing, and city officials have joined her in the fight."

FULL STORY HERE.

 As for Montgomery:

Tourism-related spending in Montgomery reached an all-time high in 2019...$1.03-Billion.

Other Montgomery attractions that had closed have reopened, including the EJI lynching memorial. Others are still closed, including some restaurants and retail stores.

The Capitol and its memorial filled grounds reopened on Wednesday.
