Recently the City of Montgomery released a statement on its social media format proclaiming that Montgomery is celebrating the month of June as Pride month. “Mayor Steven Reed is committed to creating a more inclusive and safer city for members of our LGBTQ+ community!” the statement reads.

Montgomery Pride United - our city’s LGBTQ+ resource center - along with many other organizations is asking that the city amend the city’s Code of Ordinances to include gender identity in the city’s non-discrimination ordinance. We hope to have this proposal presented at the next city council meeting.

Montgomery scored low (17 out of 100) on the last municipality ratings for LGBTQ protections in cities across the state. Currently, only three cities in Alabama - Birmingham, Montevallo, and Tuscaloosa include gender identity in their nondiscrimination laws. We believe that it is time that Montgomery joined this list.
If Montgomery truly is the birthplace of the civil rights movement and the Capital of Dreams and truly desires to protect and enrich the rights of all of its citizens, we urge you to accept the amendment to include gender identity in the city's nondiscrimination ordinance.

The above sample letter has been sent to all city council members,  and we urge you to do the same as soon as possible. Below are links to the city's announcement on their social media and a link to the city council members contact information. (Source; MPU)
