Expect some push back against another street name change being considered by The Montgomery City Council:
George Wallace, Jr. will likely oppose it.
"Wallace Drive" is on the list, a street in an industrial area off the South Boulevard.
It is named after former Governor George Wallace, known for proclaiming in 1963 "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" from the steps of the Alabama Capitol building.
I've always wondered about the lack of things in Montgomery named for the longtime Governor. There are no statues of him, but there is a community college bearing his name.
A donor gave the city $25,000 to pay the fine imposed by Republican Governor Ivey and Republican Attorney General Steve Marshall because that renaming violated a law upheld by Ivey and Marshall blocking the renaming of confederate named street and buildings.
Jeff Davis Avenue became Fred D. Gray Avenue.
There would likely be another fine from Ivey and Marshall if Wallace Drive is changed.
And more fines are coming when the city changes the names of two confederate-linked schools.
