I moved to Birmingham, Alabama from Manhattan in 1976.
I figured I would spend a few years in The South.
I'm still here.
I read today (2022) that the rent in New York (i.e. Manhattan) now averages $5,000 A MONTH!
When I left NYC, the monthly rent was about $450 a month...and that was too much for me at the time, prompting my 'YES" to a job offer in Birmingham. My now longtime friend and then News Director, Bob Rowe, described his Birmingham apartment...with a (sunken living room!)...as having two bedrooms and two baths...costing less than my tiny NYC apartment (but it WAS just a half block away from Washington Square).
I know, location, location, location. But still!
How much do New York residents have to earn to afford a $5k apartment?
