The Former Alabama Governor...

 ....most likely to be mistaken for Santa this time of year....

 

The GOP might have considered him a Santa, being the first Republican Governor in Alabama....but read  his bio HERE. 

 

 "The most striking demonstration of Smith's conservative proclivities was his refusal to take drastic action against the terrorist Ku Klux Klan organization. His term coincided with that group's worst violence, but Smith did not invoke the Constitution's provisions for a state militia because such a force would be overwhelmingly composed of newly freed black men, and this might have led to a racial bloodbath."

I doubt there are many Republicans who will claim him!

(Smith was nominated in the 1868 gubernatorial election, and became Alabama's first elected Republican governor on February 4, 1868. He was sworn into office on July 13, 1868. During his term, the general assembly ratified the 14th Amendment to the Federal Constitution, and elected U.S. senators to represent Alabama.)
