Job Restriction

How would you feel if you were forbidden from leaving  your job and going to work for a competitor across the street, so to speak?

Most folks won't ever find themselves in that position, but for people in broadcasting it is a regular dilemma.

Broadcast companies make regular use of so-called "non-compete clauses", forcing potential employees to sign them if they want to work at that station.

Broadcast owners love 'em, of course, because they remove the most significant power most workers have, the ability to leave and be hired by another broadcaster. The clauses are common in so many broadcast contracts, and they force candidates for jobs to promise legally they will not do so. (At least for stations in the same general location).

The Biden Administration's Federal Trade Commission is expected to ban the clauses soon.

There are numerous stories about the proposed change online, including this one in the N.Y. Times.
