How The Last Shipment Of Slaves Founded Africatown in The Notoriously Racist Deep South | The African Exponent.

Recently, National Geographic named the Africatown Heritage
House of Mobile the #1 museum for 2023. Africatown made

international headlines when the remains of the
Clotilda slave ship
were discovered in the Mobile waters in 2019.

This 5,000-square-foot
interpretive center will display pieces of
the Clotilda that have been recovered from the wreck and are on

loan from the Alabama Historical Commission. Along with the

pieces, the museum will also feature text panels, documents,

stories, and various artifacts and art detailing the lives of the 110

survivors aboard the vessel.

The Heritage House is a collaborative project between many

partners and the Alabama Historical Commission is honored to be

one of them.

The museum is scheduled to open July 8 - the same date the

survivors arrived in Mobile in 1860.

Named best museum for 2023!
