The teenage son of a Montgomery County sheriff's Deputy is scheduled to go on trial in October for the murder of Lowndes County Sheriff "Big John" Williams in 2019.Williams was shot and killed at a convenience store when he tried to disperse a crowd of teens.
There are calls by defense lawyers for the capital murder trial to be moved to another county because of publicity since the killing.
The Lowndes county courthouse in which the trial is now se to be held is, in fact, named for the former sheriff.
There is also a racial element to the trial, with the murdered sheriff being black and the suspect, William Johnson, white. Choosing an impartial jury in Lowndes County will be difficult.
A 4th annual motorcycle ride in honor of the sheriff was held this week, with the money going for scholarships.
