Today in 1864-- Atlanta collapses and burns as Confederates flee.
During tours I lead of the 1852 Alabama State Capitol building I comment about what might have been...IF...the confederacy, founded in the building, had stayed there instead of moving to Richmond three months later.
Look at these photos of that Virginia city after the war and you'll see what Montgomery might have looked like.
Instead, we're able to show visitors the beautiful capitol building:
(left) The restored Alabama Senate chamber, in which seven states gathered and voted to leave the U.S. and become the confederacy. Eventually 11 states joined: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.Inside the capitol dome, paintings display an interpretation of Alabama history.
