Another pedestrian death overnight in Montgomery...a statistic that is increasing in Alabama:
2015 - 96
2016 - 122
2017 - 113
2018 - 106
2019 - 114
2020 - 105
2021 - 125
At least 7,508 pedestrians were struck and killed by cars in the United States in 2022 — the most in 41 years — according to a separate report from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).
- Pedestrian fatalities have skyrocketed 77% since 2010, compared to 25% for all other traffic-related deaths, the report found.
The most recent in Montgomery happened last night on the East-South Boulevard near I-65, the site of many similar accidents....and the site of highway improvements designed to reduce pedestrian accidents.
(As reported by MPD: On Friday, January 5, 2024, at about 10:22 p.m., MPD and Fire Medics responded to the 1100 block of West South Boulevard in reference to a Vehicle vs Pedestrian accident. Contact was made with an adult male (pedestrian) who sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The driver fled the area prior to MPD’s arrival. The roadway was closed however, it has since reopened. There is no additional information available for release in connection to this continuing investigation.)
As we reported in 2019:
"The state started working on the stretch of Southern Boulevard East of I-65 in March, adding crosswalks and electronic crossing signs on a stretch of the Southern Boulevard where there have been multiple pedestrian accidents before the most recent one.
They're also adding sidewalks on both sides of the boulevard near I-65 and Davenport Drive.
The area is near the Greyhound Bus Station on one side of the Boulevard and several fast-food restaurants and hotels on the other."
