(Kay Ivey has been in statewide office since 2002. Does she accept any blame?)
Alabama has the nation's most crowded prison system, and yet it spends the least of any state on a per-prisoner basis.[5] In 2015 it housed more than 24,000 inmates in a system designed for 13,318.[3] In 2015 it settled a class-action suit over physical and sexual violence against inmates at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka.[4] The department also spends the least of any state on a per-prisoner basis.[5]
