United Van Lines is out with its annual report on who's moving and where they're moving to. Alabama earns a fifth position, with the South overall gaining and the Northeast losing population.
I want it on the record that when I moved from New York City to Birmingham in 1976, I closed the gate. Not my fault if all these Yankees are storming the South. (-:
The United folks report the following inbound vs outbound for Alabama: 2,954 (57.9%) moving into the state, and 2,151 (42.1%) folks leaving Alabama. I suspect the automotive industry growth is responsible. But remember: this report ONLY includes United's customers and there are many movers around.
I read not too long ago that by 2012 60% of US residents will reside in the South. I look forward to the change that will come with the influx new people, but I hope that Alabama retains its rural charms.
