Going through some old photos the other day when I came across this one, taken from the WERC Traffic Helicopter in the late 1970's. It was taken from above I-59 near Arkadelphia Road looking toward Downtown. Really. U.S. Steel was going full speed and my memory tells me air polution alerts were a lot more common. The late Tommy Charles of WSGN/WERC fame used to say "that's not smog..that's jobs!" Birmingham still has air trouble, but maybe things have approved a little?
