How (Not) To Build A Ship

Today's Press-Register has a story about the launching of new Navy Ship called The Independence. The story tells about problems launching it that delayed the event so long that almost all of the visitors were gone by the time it slid into the water. On the heels of the devastating New York Times story on Friday about the ship in Mobile and a second ship, I wonder how secure the crew will feel once on board? And how secure will taxpayers feel with the spiraling cost of new ship? While the Times story focuses allegations of waste ("A project heralded as the dawning of an innovative, low-cost era in Navy shipbuilding has turned into a case study of how not to build a combat ship."), the Register only hints at it by reporting "the price tag on each prototype has ballooned past the half- billion-dollar mark after an initial estimate of about $220 million."
