Crist or Robertson?
So now Florida Governor Crist is suggesting his prayers are protecting Florida from hurricanes. God must be kept very, very busy trying to sort through all of the requests people send his way, and deciding who to smite. Pat Robertson suggested bad things like hurricanes were happening to Florida because homosexuals were cavorting around there. Now the state's Governor suggests all it takes is some prayers tucked into the Wailing Wall and poof! Protected as if by a giant condom. I always wonder when I see football teams or individual players kneeling, asking for a win. Does God choose the victor based on whether one of the players visited Jerusalem? And what about when the Christians in the Axis nations prayed against the Christians among the Allies in WWII? Tough decisions. Seems like it would take a Divine Power to decide.

Oh man that had me rolling!
ReplyDeleteI don't think the teams are praying for a win, but for protection for everyone playing from injury. At least that's what we always prayed for before a game.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a mistake to infer that Mr. Crist's prayers are the exclusive means through which Florida has escaped hurricane damage vis-à-vis: "Now the state's Governor suggests all it takes is some prayers tucked into the Wailing Wall and poof!"
ReplyDeleteI think the extrapolation to football and war is also flawed.
AP writer Brendan Farringtton thought this item important enough to mention it twice - at the beginning of the story, and at the end: "Crist said he isn't trying to take credit..." and "...he said he's not taking credit for the lack of storms in this hurricane-prone state."
Seems to me, Governor Crist has a love for the people of that state. He's certainly not asking for anything selfish!
And, I think it short-sighted to presume that he was the only one praying for safety and preservation. Doubtless, his petition was the same as untold, more accurately - un-interviewed private figures- throughout the state, nation, and the world over.
Whether or not Florida has experienced relief as the exclusive result of Mr. C's prayers or not is not for us to judge. I think it inane to presuppose it so.
That this one public figure's public sharing of his faith has become some fodder and sport for various sycophants and others is not surprising.
Whether or not the Almighty in Divine wisdom through whatever means chose to grant Mr. Crist's prayer (which was doubtless the same as untold others not interviewed) remains to be seen. However, suffice it to say, as he noted, "Time goes on... May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December... no hurricanes,"
Whatever the reason, it seems Mr. C has his priorities in order, and says, "I give that to God," and "Thank God."
Maybe Crist thinks he is Christ.
