One interesting item from the Presidential Election results...President-Elect Obama lost eight of the eleven original states of the Confederacy. (He won only Florida, Virginia and North Carolina.) But he also WON both of the cities that served as Capitols of the Confederacy, Montgomery and Richmond, the latter by a landslide.
MONTGOMERY ALABAMA
McCain 41,972 (40.2%)
Obama 61,999 (59.4%)
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA
McCain 18,472 (20%)
Obama 73,180 (79.2%)
Both former capitols now have African-American populations of 53%.
Senator McCain told Larry King last week: "Look, there's racism in America -- we all know that... But I am totally convinced that 99 and forty-four-one-hundredths percent of Americans are going to make the decision based on who is best to lead this country,"
But when you look at the election map, with virtually all of the former Confederate States bright red, is it fair to suggest that race was at least a factor?
[See an article in the NY Times for their take on Obama and the Confederate States.]
I'm watching your show as I type this comment. The comments from Paul Davis I think answers the question that yes, race was indeed a factor.
