Those Converter Box "Coupons"...
...are good again, even if they expired. The stimulus package included some additional cash to fund the program. Mine expired, and I certainly wasn't alone...17 Million others did too, according to a story out this morning. David Pogue has a cute story about his experience with one in the Times today. Anyway back to Circuit City, uh. better make that Best Buy or any of the Big Box retailers, it's converter box time.

Senator John McCain was the brainchild behind the converter box coupon. In fact it was in 2004 that he came up the "brilliant" idea to ultimately subsidize Big Business with taxpayer dollars. (see article entitled "Uncle Sam Wants Your Airwaves" by Michael Grebb, published 09.22.04 - http://www.wired.com/politics/law/news/2004/09/65041)
ReplyDeleteHis ostensible purpose was to motivate the public to make the switch to digital television. However, in my opinion, it was deeply flawed.
Instead, a tax incentive program for manufacturers should have been initiated. Combined with a rebate and turn-in for old teevees upon purchase of new digital teevees, it would have spurred rapid corporate manufacturing, deep discounts, consumer spending, recycling of old teevees, and our nation could have by now, been fully digitized on the teevee frequencies.
Neither I, my family or friends have bought a C-box. And neither they nor I have any intentions of doing so. We watch satellite television, so there's no necessity for them.
Further, I know of many folks who subscribe to cable teevee, and they've not bought 'em.
In my estimation, McCain's idea is proof positive of how far behind the times his ideas are.
I'm glad he didn't get elected. Why, he can't even use a computer!
Good grief!
