Police Tactics
The use of roadblocks by police is being questioned by some Montgomery residents, and so officials will go before the city council tonight to explain just when and where they've been using them. Residents of West Montgomery, a less affluent section of town, suggest police use the roadblocks in their part of town more often than in the East-side, home to many affluent subdivisions and the areas most exclusive shopping area. The police have already released some of the information, showing fewer roadblocks in the West, but I'm not a big fan...there's something heavy-handed about it that bugs me. Sure, the courts have ruled the roadblocks can be used, but I'm not sure they should be used. With that philosophy, why not just randomly select houses for searches too? Again, I know the legal arguments and the difference between a car driving on a "public" road and a home, but still...

You can't believe anything the police say. Ever. They lie to get warrants. They lie to get permission to search your car at road blocks or if they stop you for some reason and they lie like hell on the stand. Never believe anything they say.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you Tim, roadblocks should be against the law. They fly in the face of the 4th Amendment. Unless they know I have committed a crime then I should not have to show them my damn papers or be harassed by them in any way.
It got really bad around here a few months ago when the city police and sheriff's dept. started using their canine cops to conduct routine traffic stops and license checks. I went through one where the cop was standing in the middle of the road with his snarling beast on a string. Miraculously I passed the sniff test. Whew! :)
I love German Shepherds, own two of them...but was sorely tempted to run over that one and claim I lost control of my car due to a panic attack induced by the illegal activity of the policeman.
I posted about it on the local paper forums and suddenly using canine cops to conduct traffic stops ceased.
