AP is reporting areas of Birmingham and Montgomery are on the list of the 25 worst areas in the country for vacant housing...in all, seven U.S. Census tracks in the state are on the list. They only studied areas with at least a thousand houses and less than 5% considered vacation homes.
If you've ever lived on a block with an empty home, you know what a target it becomes for vandals. Frequently the yard is not kept up, and a house with nobody living in it just seems to deteriorate faster. And that hurts the property values and security or everyone else.
