Play Ball?
Birmingham News columnist John Archibald has praise for Mayor Larry Langford (No, really! Praise!) in today's paper. Langford's idea is to build on the history surrounding Rickwood Field and create a museum to celebrate the history of both black and white baseball. This being Alabama, baseball was segregated, like everything else, back then. For years, veterans of the old Negro Baseball League have been pushing for a museum to honor their accomplishments. There are dozens of baseball museums across the country, including the big one in Cooperstown NY, and a "Negro League" museum in Kansas City, MO. The only question I have is whether there's enough interest in baseball to support the project. We have several minor league teams that do well, but, after all, isn't Alabama a college football state? And where's the college football museum? In South Bend Indiana.

La-La Land...
ReplyDeleteThe Bummin'ham News has a vested interest in agreeing with this ludicrous idea because any public sentiment - positive, or negative - will not only accrue to the the sentiment that an original (or not) idea has emerged from La-La, but because it'll sell more newspapers.
Instead, it's the same old, same old. Domed (doomed?) to failure.
Maybe La-La might want to build a "National Slavery Museum."
Oh wait... that's already in Fredericksburg, VA.

What about a shrine to education?
Wait!
That would be a first class school!
NOT in Birmingham!
Instead, La-La should concentrate on eliminating the recently renewed AND increased occupational tax upon the good working citizens (and those whom work, but do not reside) in Birmingham.
Having paid that excruciating tax myself, and reading what the damnfools that call themselves "public servants" have done to The Tragic City, I can only hope that every person in Bummin'ham will get a good sloppy kiss from every corrupt elected official... because they've already been screwed.
