Now Y'all Be Nice to Her!
L.A. Times column by a woman, Kerry Madden, who is new to Birmingham---working at UAB, and who has left her husband and child behind in Los Angeles. Hey, for what it's worth, I remember the feeling. I moved from Manhattan to Birmingham, and that was so long ago you don't want to know what a jarring experience it was. But also a warning. I'm still here.
[UPDATE: Since that posting, I've read Kerry Madden's own website and learned that 1) she grew up the daughter of a football coach (her first novel was titled Offsides. She lived in Knoxville. And she wrote a biography of Harper Lee (though Ms. Lee was as usual, not interviewed for it). And she has a link on her page to a Speaker's Bureau called "Southern Breeze"!
In other words...why does her column make her sound so much like a fish out of water???? She couldn't be much more of a Southern Gal. We shouldn't be welcoming her...she should be operating her own welcome waggon!]

Nice articles (yours and hers.)
ReplyDeleteI, too, was scared silly about moving from the DC suburbs to Birmingham in 1996. I, too, was often asked: Alabama or Auburn. (Answer: Neither. I'm not a sports fan. Response: Deep, deep shock and occasional sympathy.)
At that time my wife was doing her doctoral internship at the University of Miami. We visited each other about once a month. Mostly she came to Birmingham, as I dislike Miami.
