Tuition Hike

     Justification for Troy University's 19% hike in tuition costs:

"Universities across the country are coping with the negative effects of a stagnant economy by approving increases in tuition and fees," Jim Bookout, senior vice chancellor for finance and business affairs, said in a prepared statement.

     From a story by Stan Diel in The Birmingham News today.
    Uh, aren't the students also coping with the negative effects of a stagnant economy?

  1. Are they giving their staff 19% pay raises?

    (The administrators, maybe.)

  2. Hey... Tim!

    You forgot about Dr. David Williams' failing presidency at UAH!

    Asked for, and received, a 14 & 19% tuition increase for in, and out-of-state students, respectively.

    Under his (mis)leadership, student enrollment has DECLINED, when traditionally, in difficult times, enrollments go UP!

    He's DEMANDED that:
    1.) ALL freshmen & sophomores MUST live on campus - which in turn, so incensed parents that legislation by Howard Sanderford was pending in the State Senate to prohibit such;

    2.) ALL students - Frosh, Soph, Jr, Sr, Grad, Post grad - must purchase meal tickets;

    3.) Narrowly missed Faculty Senate censure - by a vote of 18-20 - for item #1;

    4.) Hired former NASA administrator Michael Griffin as "eminent scholar and tenured professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering," - at $350,000 per anum (only $50k less than his own salary);

    5.) FIRED numerous long-time staff whose work made the university successful;

    6.) Set about an institutional name change, earning the ire of students, faculty, staff and alumni;

    7.) Hired a personal housekeeper on state salary (while firing other staff & faculty);

    8.) FAILED to have foresight about background investigations, which led to the Amy Bishop Mass Murder;

    9.) Recently spent $60,000 to hire a Chicago-based consultancy firm to figure out how to increase enrollment;

    10.) Need I continue?

    Damn fool idiot!

    Y'know... there's a certain amount of increase that will naturally occur with any decrease in price. It's a reality in almost every market - including education.

    Too bad that "educated" English dumbass can't figure it out!
