Translation Tremors

"Man shall not live on bread alone."

                                        OR

"People do not live on bread alone."

That's one example of a newly translated version of the bible.....the old gender neutral issue is causing a stir. Here's an interesting article about it in the Atlanta-Journal today.

  1. While a student at Union Theological Seminary in NYC in the late 1960's, I was privileged to take a seminar class that met around the table used by the scholars who developed the Revised Standard Version. (NT published in 1948 and the entire Bible in 1952.)

    Yea, the gender question has not gone away. The basic problem is that the English language does not have a specific pronoun for God, nor for "either man or woman."
