The April 4, 1977 Smithfield Tornado near Birmingham, the first major story I covered after moving to Birmingham in 1976.
The photos above were taken from the WERC Traffic Copter the next morning, but I was on the ground within an hour of the hit. Unforgettable. I blogged about it in a previous year here. You'll find additional pictures there, and my earlier speculation that a lack of warning by radio stations may have contributed to the 22 people who died.
