The Birmingham News editorializes today against a proposal by the GOP requiring party registration:
I've been arguing that point for years. I say even if party registration is not approved, let 'em pay! The only purpose of the primary elections is for the party to select a nominee to run in the real General Election in November.
Why should taxpayers foot the bill? The system locks out third-party and independent candidates almost completely,
"But if the Republican-controlled Legislature passes party registration, the parties should be at least forced to pay for those elections. Now, all taxpayers are picking up the tab for party primaries. At least, those taxpayers have a choice of which primary in which to vote."
