Preservation Award

The Greyhound Bus/Freedom Riders Museum in Montgomery will be presented with one of 22 2012 Preservation awards on Friday.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation praises the foresight of those who saved the old bus terminal from demolition when the new Federal Courthouse was built downtown.
Montgomery is a pre-civil war city. There no shortage of historic buildings. Yet there are many that were allowed to fall in beyond-saving disrepair, and others that were torn down despite pleas from preservationists.
Not every old building is historic and worth saving. But saving the bus station where freedom riders were attacked as police looked the other way was well worth the effort.
Applause for those who made it happen!
