The outage stretched up to Canada and was caused by human error.
I wonder whatever happened to the worker who made that mistake!
My school was about 40 miles north of the city and we kids though it was a Russian attack!

Power was mostly restored by the next morning in 1965.
Two friends of mine in N.J. are just now getting their power back after Sandy.
I was there! I was living in the Hell's Kitchen area, 36th St. between 8th and 9th.
ReplyDeleteI remember that it was 5:32 pm when everything went out. It was frustrating to struggle in darkness and see the lights on in NJ across the Hudson River.
My favorite story of this event: The subways lost electricity, of course. People were panicking on the platforms.
(Remember, it was rush hour, a normally chaotic time anyway.)
A blind man heard the commotion and asked someone what was happening. The person responded that all the lights were out.
The blind man's response: "So what!"
Great story...and a reminder not to presume others are the same as you.
