The OTHER Big Blackout in NYC

The NY Times coverage.

As the recovery continues in New York/New Jersey from Sandy, some folks may remember another huge blackout that hit the area...47 years ago today...an event that left 30 Million people without power!
The outage stretched up to Canada and was caused by human error
I wonder whatever happened to the worker who made that mistake!
My school was about 40 miles north of the city and we kids though it was a Russian attack!

The N.Y. Times was able to publish by using the presses of a Newark NJ paper.

A Book The NY Times published
The Times reporter/father of a friend of mine, Edward Hudson, contributed to a book the paper published titled "The Night The Lights Went Out".
Power was mostly restored by the next morning in 1965.
Two friends of mine in N.J. are just now getting their power back after Sandy.

  1. I was there! I was living in the Hell's Kitchen area, 36th St. between 8th and 9th.

I remember that it was 5:32 pm when everything went out. It was frustrating to struggle in darkness and see the lights on in NJ across the Hudson River.

My favorite story of this event: The subways lost electricity, of course. People were panicking on the platforms.

(Remember, it was rush hour, a normally chaotic time anyway.)

A blind man heard the commotion and asked someone what was happening. The person responded that all the lights were out.

The blind man's response: "So what!"

  2. Great story...and a reminder not to presume others are the same as you.
