150 Years after The Hatteras is Sunk

Today's the anniversary of the Civil War sinking of the USS Hatteras by the CSS Alabama...the only time during the war that a Confederate ship sank a US ship.
The wreckage of the ship was recently discovered in just 60 feet of water off Galveston, Texas.

January 11, 1863, The CSS Alabama sinks The USS Hatteras.

This sketch was done in the days after the sinking for Harper's.

[PLUS: The New York Times published an interesting story about the anniversary this week as well. If you are not blocked by the paper's pay-wall, you can read it here. ]
