At least on the surface, a former Labor Union leader attacking the head of a poverty advocacy group sounds like an unexpected flare up.
But former AFL-CIO head Stewart Burkhalter's rant against Alabama Arise in The Birmingham News centers on coal.
Burkhalter sees coal as a (union) job creating element. Alabama's Arise sees coal-burning power plants as a cause of serious Alabama illness, which the poor can not pay for.
Advocacy groups, including unions, have rather narrowly focused missions. And in this case, the goals could not be further apart.
