You could not have asked for nicer weather for today's Alabama Book Festival at Old Alabama Town in Montgomery. The crowds were equally nice, with lots of good books and good conversation.
We stopped by the pottery shop run by Lisa Lenox, no relation, and had a conversation about the "one n" vs "two n's" Lennox families (she says one of the families was a traitor to the King and was ejected from the family. I vote for the two n side.
I talked with Historian Mary Ann Neely and New South Book Publisher Randall Williams, commenting that all of the literati were there. "All twelve," joked Williams.
I commiserated with another publisher, Tina Tatum of Auburn's non-profit Solomon and George Publishers, They operate a brick and mortar bookstore in Auburn, The Gnu's Room. but say they will close the doors this Summer.
How sad that independent bookstores are dying, primarily because so many people buy their books through the mass online retailers.
Alabama Shakespeare Festival actor David Umansky talked about their current shows, including Gods of Carnage and Around The World in 80 Days. He plays Sebastian in Twelfth Night and joined the company in January from New Jersey, where he attended Rutgers.
