Sunday Focus: The Art of Apology

Lot of folks have been saying I'm sorry...and other not saying it enough.
  • On Saturday it was this paragraph in an in-flight magazine article that had an airline firing
editorial employees and saying mea culpa:

"Pilot training in AirAsia is continuous and very thorough. Rest assured that your captain is well prepared to ensure your plane will never get lost."

Air-Asia officials quickly withdrew the article, which was written before the largest search in history began for a missing Malaysian Air plane in the Indian Ocean.

  •  The new CEO of General Motors practically made apology her middle name before Congress, as she tried to explain how the company allowed ten years to pass without a recall, as customers died from a defect in their Cobalt model.

  • The Texas Rangers were saying sorry for allowing trash to pile up at the base of a statue they installed in 2012 to honor a fan who died in an accident at the stadium when he fell over a railing trying to catch a ball.

  • Yet there was another person in the news who did NOT apologize..at least not thoroughly enough to stop the river of criticism.
When Brendan Eich was named Mozilla CEO, it was pointed out that he had donated $1,000 towards the campaign to support Prop 8, the anti-gay marriage initiative in California.
This week Eich resigned after a series of indistinct attempts at apologizing.
