The Alabama Shakes continue to storm their way through musicland, earning an enormously positive review in the Times-Picayune, a paper with lots of experience reviewing great music, for their performance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival this weekend.
When, during "Heartbreaker," she (Brittany Howard) clutches her forehead and sings "I'm laying on this killing floor, and I want to die," you believe she really might expire the same way you believe her, with conviction, when she sings about fighting, making love or going to church -- sob-and-throb country soul to bring you to your knees.
Amen.
