These photos show milestones...literally.
The placing of stone markers on roadways to help travelers measure distances traveled dates to the Roman Empire.
They were largely replaced by metal sign mile-markers on U.S. Interstates, but if you look in some places you can find them...like this one on Woodley Road.
There is even a "Zero Milestone" in Washington, D.C....supposed to be the place from which all roadway distances in the U.S. would be measured., though that's not the case.
