Alabama's Governor used his media training on Friday when he was asked about Congressman Mo Brooks recent "War on Whites" comment. The way al.com describes it, a reporter asked if Bentley thought Brooks comment would hurt the state's industry hunting effort.
Blah blah blah. One of the problems was the way the reporter
asked the question...it gave the Guv an easy out. He followed the media training dictum that you answer the question you wish they had asked you...and then go on at length to the point that you run out the clock. Sorry! No time for any more questions right now!
A better, more direct question would be "Do you agree with Rep. Mo Brooks comment that Democrats are engaged in a war on whites?" with a follow up of "So you do with him?" if the Guv gives a non-answer.
I suspect the reporter was trying to frame the question in a way that would match the "job creation" theme of the event, but that's not his or her job. It's to get reaction to Brook's controversial allegation!
There is no comment made in or about Alabama that can not be viewed through a racial lens, and Brooks' direct racial allegation comment was reported internationally. Great PR.

"This is a great manufacturing state and we're doing well," he continued. "We have everything in place and the organizational structure is there. When this economy begins to pick back up, we're going to do extremely well in Alabama. I'm very, very pleased with what we're doing here."

Unfortunately the Guv can't do much, directly. Mo Brooks is an elected representative and on the Federal payroll.
ReplyDeleteHowever, it would have been classy if the Guv had answered the question directly. But we can't expect that from a Republican, can we?
