Saturday Status: Poverty in Suburbia

The population of poor people in Birmingham, Alabama, (and in America as a whole) is increasingly living in neighborhoods of similar people, and those are increasingly located in the suburbs.

The Brookings Institute is out with a large study of poverty that concludes:

"...suburbs now have nearly as many poor residents in high-poverty neighborhoods as cities. If these communities are ignored, they could become areas of concentrated poverty over time."

The study web site allows visitors to select from the nation's  largest metropolitan areas and view the stats for just that area.
