My friend Gary moved back to his former home state of Alabama from West Virginia, where he said the maximum fine for littering is $25,000.
He took the attached photo as proof, since some folks up that way didn't believe him.
Gary's right, but the details make the sign more state government political theater than an actual statement of fact.
West Virginia Littering Code
Misdemeanor. For amounts not exceeding 100 pounds or 27 cubic
feet: fine between $100 and $1,000, community service for eight to 16
hours, or both. For amounts greater than 100 pounds or 27 cubic feet,
but less than 500 pounds or 216 cubic feet: fine between $1,000 and
$2,000, community service for 16 to 32 hours, or both. For amounts
greater than 500 pounds or 216 cubic feet or any amount which had been
collected for commercial purposes: fine between $2,500 and $25,000,
imprisonment for up to one year, or both. For subsequent violations:
double the authorized range of fines and community service. So, as Gary said, you CAN be fined that much for littering...but it has to be massive large scale littering and/or litter collected for profit and then dumped. Still....If all of the littering signs in Alabama posted the maximum possible fine....who knows? It would certainly get people's attention! |
