Alabama History in Peril via HB 584

This is an email from the folks at Alabama Heritage---it is a cry for help AND an opportunity for you to review some of the Alabama historic sites that they have highlighted through their Place in Peril series.

Dear Friends of Alabama History,

If you love our "Places in Peril" annual feature, then you value decades of work by the Alabama Historical Commission! We have a surprise for you and a request….

For more than 20 years, our annual Places in Peril—identifying historic properties in jeopardy—has been a favorite among Alabama Heritage subscribers. We owe Places in Peril to the work of the Alabama Historical Commission and the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation. Most of you have heard by now of the pending legislation (HB 584) that could dissolve the Alabama Historical Commission—an unthinkable direction. In support of this vital organization—and as a bonus for you—Alabama Heritage is posting a selection of the growing list of old Places in Peril segments that have appeared in the magazine over the years.

As you enjoy this resurrection of Places in Peril, please consider doing these things in return:
  • Please share this with all the history-loving Alabamians you know.
  • As you browse through the old Places in Peril listings, post comments, if you can update the rest of us on the status of these properties. (Some will have been saved, some lost, and some still in peril.)
  • Please let your legislators know that the Alabama Historical Commission matters to you.
Winter Place in Montgomery.

  1. Reminds me of when the Taliban went around destroying ancient artifacts in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

  2. Very timely comment Jay. They just took over another ancient city and will likely do the same there.
