Sunday Focus: Ads that make you think, sometimes not for the better..

These bus shelter ads were created for Amnesty International and placed on transparent bus shelter walls in Switzerland in 2006, but they still are an eye catching way of getting people to think about issues that are remote, and yet relevant.

The copy reads:

"It's not happening here, but it's happening now.

And another advertising story, from the past week, was the Bud Light campaign that tried to position the beer as a great weekend drink, including one line that described it as...

"The Perfect beer for removing "No" from your vocabulary for the night."
And somehow that line, which seems to suggests Bud Light as a great product for date rape, made it through the creative, ethical and legal departments?

Speaking of advertising, there is a kind of ad called "native advertising" that does NOT mean ads aimed at Native-Americans. Instead, it is advertising designed to look like the editorial content in a publication--or, I suppose, on a TV station. Here's a story about it.
Back in the day there would be an admittedly tiny "advertising" disclaimer at the top of the page..though those are less and less likely.

  1. Anheuser-Busch has an ethical department?

Never knew that before. Thanks for the info. Nevertheless, I haven't touched their products for many years, unless Blue Moon is part of their product line.

My son-in-law bought a 32 ounce jug of beer from Flying Dog Brewery, which is about two mines from my home. Very potent. A four-ounce glass was enough for me at suppertime last night.

  2. Oops-two miles. I don't think we have any mines around here.

  3. You may very well have some mines...HERE's a map of the non-coal mines in the state...most of the coal mines are in Western Maryland. (-:

I don't know about the brewer but I believe many large ad agencies DO consider ethics in their products, though not quite as much as profits.
