The Capri Theatre's Science on Screen series is funded by a grant from the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Films are presented by a speaker who will discuss a scientific aspect of the film. The purpose of Science on Screen is to engage people in science through film as the foundation.
As I Lay Dying, based on one of William Faulkner's classic novels, focuses on the Bundren family as they haul the body of their dead matriarch to her hometown for burial. As you might expect, there's plenty of psychology to examine here, and Dr. Karl Kirkland, who is something of an expert in that field, is stepping up to the plate to help explain what effects can result from dragging around a corpse of a family member. If you read the novel in high school and told the teacher the family was messed up, only to be told that this is a work of art and you should appreciate that, we've got good news. Not that your teacher was completely wrong - As I Lay Dying is still a piece of art, but Dr. Kirkland can tell you how the family really is messed up. Ah, validation. And just think how much fun you can have at the next family reunion with the knowledge he'll provide!

  1. One thing Karl Kirkland is good at: taking people's money.

One thing he's not so good at: recognizing someone has Borderline Personalty Disorder and has serious suicidal tendencies.
