MMMM #511 ---Journalism at the Box Office

Newsweek and other media are reviewing two investigative journalism themed movies that are out: Truth and Spotlight.

The former film has a Montgomery-centric theme, that of G.W. Bush serving in the Air National Guard in the city. Did he or didn't he? Dan Rather's career fell apart in the aftermath of a CBS News report about the allegation that Bush performed little or no service.

The latter movie tell the true story of The Boston Globe investigation into allegations that The Catholic Church covered up repeated instances of sexual abuse by priests.

If there was a golden age of journalism movies, I'd nominate 1975 - 1976, when four films--three of them frictional--- examined print and broadcast reporting.

Absence of Malice (1974)

The Front Page (1974)

Network (1976)

Others will point to Citizen Kane (1941), Ace in The Hole (1951) or other earlier films.
