The City of Montgomery Alabama signed an agreement in 2015 to change the way people get out of jail. A legal reform group argued that people should not be kept in jail solely because they could not afford bail.
Instead of posting a cash or property bond, some defendants now just sign their name as a promise to show up, even people with no address. The jury’s still out on whether it’s been a success.
