The state apparently started issuing these specialty tag for professional firefighters in January of 2016, but somehow the first time I became aware of them was last weekend when I spotted two of them within a few minutes in Montgomery.
The colors were so bright I at first thought they might be tags for the state of Arizona.
Volunteer firefighters also have a specialty tag, and now the pros have an updated one.
There are almost fifty specialty tags in the state...plus thirty more for individual colleges and universities....plus 29 for various military interests, plus 71 antique tags for individual years.
So at least 280 different tags....and more coming every year.
Police have to hate it....imagine trying to identify a tag during a chase and having to figure out which of the many Alabama tags is on the car.
