Alabama and four other states states have reported widespread flu activity. Those states are Georgia, New York, Massachusetts and California.
The CDC says, "Influenza A viruses have predominated in the United States since the beginning of October. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses are predominating in most areas of the country. However, in the most recent three weeks, influenza A(H3) viruses were most commonly reported in the southeastern United States."
The CDC also reports one influenza-associated pediatric death in its latest report.
The CDC strongly recommends everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine every season. The agency says, "It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body. CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October. Getting vaccinated later, however, can still be beneficial."
