A Bicentennial Exhibition of Our State's Six Constitutions
Presented by the Alabama Department of Archives & History
Whose voice matters? What do we value? What is the role of state government? Who can vote?
For two centuries, Alabamians have been engaged in a civic conversation.
The people of our state have debated these issues through political conventions,
in referendums, and in the courts. And at crucial moments in history,
these fundamental questions have defined the scope of the
state’s principal governing documents:
its constitutions.

Alabama’s six constitutions are products of their framers’ values, hopes, and fears.
They reflect what it meant, and what it continues to mean, to be an Alabamian.
