"... two of the Kentucky Republican's great-great-grandfathers — James McConnell and Richard Daley — owned at least 14 slaves in Limestone County, Alabama.USA Today story.
“I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago, when none of us currently living are responsible, is a good idea,” McConnell said in June. "We’ve tried to deal with our original sin of slavery by fighting a civil war, by passing landmark civil rights legislation. We’ve elected an African American president."
Of course it is ludicrous for McConnell to name the election of Barack Obama (Or passage of the Civil Rights Bill) as proof we don't need to pay reparations. His party did everything it could to block the Civil Rights Act, and he not only fought to prevent Obama from being elected, but after Obama won, he pledged to make sure it wouldn't happen again:
"He said, his number-one goal was to make sure that Barack Obama was a one-term president.”(Washington Post story)
